Five Mineral Springs
We have five of the ten different mineral springs officially recognized in Japan!

Sulphur Spring
Enhances circulation
Skin stimulation: ●●●● ○
Characteristics
With a hydrogen ion concentration of 2.4, this hot spring is strongly acidic. This acidity allows the water to kill a variety of bacteria, while the sulphur it contains helps enhance various skin conditions.
Alum Spring
Relieves dry skin
Enhances circulation
Skin stimulation: ●●●●○
Characteristics
Long ago this type of hot spring was used to treat wounds and paralysis. With a hydrogen ion concentration of 2.2, it is the most acidic spring at Takimotokan.

Ferrous Sulphate Spring
Enhances circulation
Skin stimulation: ●●●○○
Characteristics
This hot spring’s distinctive odour comes from the hydrogen sulphide it contains. The resulting acidity allows the water to kill a variety of bacteria, while its high sulphur content softens the skin and dissolves keratin (these two effects reach deep into the skin).

Salt Spring
Stimulates circulation
Skin stimulation: ●●○○○
Characteristics
Salt springs are often called “heat baths” due to the way their water warms the body. Stimulation from the salts in the water causes the skin to become suffused with blood, and increased circulation of the blood at the surface of the skin keeps you feeling warm long after you’ve finished your bath.

Sodium Spring
Helps relieve eczema
Skin stimulation ● ● ○ ○ ○
Characteristics
The sodium bicarbonate that is the principal substance in this alkaline spring softens the skin by causing fat to emulsify. This type of hot spring has long been known as a “beauty bath.” Its red colour is caused by the oxidation of the iron in the water.
The Grand Bath layout showing five source springs

35 baths
With 5000 square metres of space, The Grand Bath is the largest onsen in Hokkaido.
The Yumori spirit
Water is life. We’re committed to maintaining the quality of the water flowing from our springs.
Using their five senses, our yumori (“bathkeepers”) recognize any changes in the consistent flow and quality of water from our source springs. They clean The Grand Bath every day from floor to ceiling.

Kinzo Founder’s Pool
A source of healing.
Tucked away in a corner of the open-air baths is a replica of the bath our founders Kinzo and Sata Takimoto soaked in.
