On Monday, it snowed here in Noboribetsu Onsen and was very cold. Today, though, the temperature steadily rose to more than 10 degrees Celsius by lunchtime, and the skies were clear. Spring is surely on its way, and to help herald the new season, brave and ornate warlords have appeared at Dai-ichi Takimotokan!

This is a May Doll! It is different from the dolls that were in our lobby until last month. These brave warlords will welcome guests until Children’s Day on May 5. Originally called Boy’s Day, during the Edo Period (1603-1868), samurai families might display real armor in miniature. Later, the dolls were used to represent child heroes who made wise decisions that helped others. Dolls were also fashioned to represent real generals or leaders, including the emperor himself. In 1948, the holiday came to represent all children. Many families still include the dolls in their traditional displays as well as carp flags and other items that signify health and safety for children.
